richard hell goes off

As a poet now, Richard Hell is perhaps not as good as he could have been had he not spent upwards of twenty years playing music.

Fuck you. If you want to say something like that, say it to my face. You don't hear me making claims about how "good" my poetry is, but who the fuck do you think you are? All this writing of yours is presented as if you're a person called upon to make judgments from some position of earned respect. That's not who you are. You're a callow kid with a job reading slush for a pretentious irrelevant "poetry" magazine [Poetry, not Bookslut]. You sought an interview from me, I was kind enough to grant it, and now you're being an asshole by exercising some grotesquely deluded misapprehension that your role in this includes some call to fucking critically assess my skills. Also, it was not twenty but ten years I spent with bands.

Commentary:

For what it's worth, I think Travis deserved everything Hell threw at him. His introduction is trite and condescending and some of his interview questions are stupid ("What do you care more about, music or matter?").

Bookslut (both the blog and the webzine) generally seems to confuse being brash and smug with having something to say, but this is the worst thing they've published. Although I will credit them for having the balls to print Hell's response, which is the only thing that redeems that intro in any way.

I totally agree. The piece itself would be of little note if not for the Hell call and response introduction.

I do give the writer credit for actually having the balls/decency/whatever to actually go ahead and publish it, but then I rescind such credit when it's clear he didn't do it in the actual article that maybe appeared in that poetry magazine.

Also, there's way too much of this crap being published online at the same time many bloggers want to be called journalists. Although I think some bloggers really are journalists, I think many who call themselves that are still only pretending.
