Why is Mark Ames so angry? Klosterman's book is just that: a book. If you don't like it, don't read it. If the material is so infuriating, and Ames read the entire thing, who looks like more of a jackass? Klosterman or Ames?

Mark Ames makes good points, and has a very good sense of humor while he's at it. Why not use humor to make your points more clear? It's the sense of humor Klosterman-fans can't handle. Mark Ames analyses the way Klosterman is fake in his intentions, and also he gives some really hilarious examples of why some things Klosterman writes seem only to be written to sound interesting. I think the statement 'Mark Ames (...)critic Klosterman for no real good reason at all, other than a lack of comprehension and an aversion to his jacket photo' is not a good one, i mean Ames clearly analyses the whole thing in a intelligent and humorous way. In the meantime he speaks out his hatred for the Klosterman type, thereby placing it in a societal context, meaning that the intellectuals in America are mostly some posing fakers, who for example would fake a pro-violence attitude, but will shit their pants if you would so much as wave a cheeseburger at them. And i think Billy Joel sucks also. I'm Dutch, so excuse my English.

I don't know who Mark Ames is, but I read the NY Press piece. The level of vitriol was a little astounding and to me, he just came off as a pissed off pretentious twit who was wounded by Klosterman's populist attitude. And dammit, Billy Joel is good, anyone who doesn't know that is a jackass in my book.

Klosterman is a product of an exponentially poisoned generation; poisoned by the very materialistic nothingness his mind has absorbed through pop culture obsession. It's quite clear that Ames is outraged that a quirky and mildly insightful analytical mind like Klosterman is so far off of creating any constructive message. I think Ames is right when he says that Klosterman is what is wrong with America; his hypothetical involving the comparison of importance between Einstein and a 5-useless-trick-magician is a very telling anecdote of Klosterman's polluted train of thought. It is that same near sightedness and self-indulgence that can be seen across most facets of americana, most dangeroulsy in their foreign policy over the past 50 years. My thoughts on this are all over the place but still I could not resist commenting on such a serious (but warranted) attack on a geeky guy with serious women issues. Oh, and I think Billy Joel is cool.
