I've been in Taitung for two days, hopefully soon on my way to Ludao Island and Lanyu Island, however a typhoon that should be passing over or actually underneath Taiwan after midnight tonight has thrown a kink into those plans.
I'm staying in a hostel called the Gringo, in a room so small that when wed the door it smacked right into the bunk beds that take up the entirety of the room. Actually there is a small space between the door and bunk beds, where a large lounge chair runs the width of the space between the wall and beds, with not even an inch to spare on either side. In front of the chair is a 3 foot square of space where you can stand and enter the bathroom. That is the entire room.
Yesterday, after a five hour train journey to Taitung, we went to a beach that was supposedly the most beautiful in all of Taiwan according to the Lonely Planet, only to find it completely overrun with trash, and no tents or camping facilities as promised, so we began walking for about three km back towards the harbor area where we hoped to book passage on a boat to Green Island, deciding to get there as quickly as possible. The walk proved too long and arduous considering we were carrying heavily stuffed hiking backpacks on a road that only seemed to go uphill and we decided to cross the road where traffic was going in our direction and hitchhike to the harbor which seemed nowhere in sight. Before we even had a chance to turn and stick our thumbs out, a car stopped for us and we met Kathy Wong and the real adventure began.
Hopefully soon we will be riding motorbikes across the expanses of these two little islands, and having the vacation of our lives. For now we are in this sleepy, dirty, but still charming and amusing town killing time which explains how after only two days I'm at an internet cafe writing home.
