false starts: santa parade

Wherein I tackle the age-old question: What the hell do you say about a Santa Parade in a mall?

Call us ignorant, but we never knew Santa lived in a mall.

In the movie “I’m Gonna Get You Sucka,” one ghetto superstar remarks to his younger counterpart, “Every superhero needs theme music” as a soul group follows him down the street, wah-wah pedaling his every strutting step. Now just re-imagine that scene as Santa Claus and the Raytown South Marching Band and you’ve got the image of just how strange this really is.

Magic. When your kids ask how Santa can be riding through the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade one day and be headmastering the Santa Parade at the Blue Ridge Mall the next, feel free to rely on the one word explanation: magic.

Santa Claus is probably neck and neck with Elvis for most impersonated cultural icon. But while Elvis imitators have a voice, a hip-swivel and an attitude to get down, Santa impersonators have a foolproof costume and one line to get down.
