happy

South African police will crack down hard on anybody throwing old fridges from high-rise buildings during the New Year's holiday, they say. Police and soldiers are on patrol in Johannesburg's notorious Hillbrow suburb, famous for the practice. Throwing heavy objects from balconies and firing guns have become something of a bad "New Year's institution," said police Inspector Kriben Naidoo. It is not clear why Hillbrow residents have taken to seeing in the...

these are the people in the neighborhood

Sitting on the porch, enjoying a cigarette in the 50 degree december weather, a big blue conversion van pulls up across the street and parks. no one exits. After the cigarette is finished, a woman in the van begins yelling "You got come all over me. Don't tell me that's not come, cause I know it is." She continues yelling this over and over, louder and more outraged each time. Pretty soon,...

the georgian pickpocket

"Legend has it that the most successful Georgian pickpockets like to build their mansions in the west coast city of Zugdidi, on the eastern shore of the Black Sea, far from Georgia's capital, Tbilisi. And since many sons naturally step into their fathers' professions," Volod'a tells me, "experts claim Zugdidi is a virtual 'school of pickpocketing.'"...

in search of the perfect coke dealer

She leans forward. "I'd really like it to be run like any other business and I don't mind paying more for that. At all. I'd like it to be reputable. I'd like the quality to be consistent—to know what I'm going to get, the quantity to be consistent. i think that's what everyone's looking for, really. Convenience, consistency, and quality." "Is there anything else you'd like from your ideal dealer?" I ask....

bad news: the movie

Shot 20 minutes ago in my living room, using my Casio QV-3000EX digital still camera. The movie feature produces crude lo-res video that looks like a bootlegged snuff film. But there's a quick and dirty end result that's fairly small and can be fairly interesting. I'm gonna mess around with it some more, see if I can't make something interesting out of it all. Let me know if it doesn't work for...

they said the same thing to pound

From Vinny: Alright, the best I can remember it: In Hemingway's allegedly non-fictional account from "A Moveable Feast" he was rumored to get some big award from a Parisian literary journal. He was excited or as excited as he could get considering he was Hemingway. The editor of the magazine took him aside and pretty much assured him that he was a shoe in for the accolade. When he casually mentioned this...

dear patience

A Natick man accused of beating his female roommate with a hammer last month has sent a Christmas card to her dog in which he claims to be the devil. Kathleen Powers, 49, formerly of 74 South Ave., said the card, sent by Michael Stuart, 49, disturbed her so much she had nightmares. "What's happening in my head now -- I'm having dreams, nightmares," said Powers. "I'm having the nightmares, it's bees...

when the pot calls the kettle

Talking politics with White House Chief of Staff H.R. Haldeman at Camp David in August 1972, Nixon switched the conversation to two Republican governors, Reagan of California and Nelson Rockefeller of New York. Both men unsuccessfully sought the 1968 Republican presidential nomination that Nixon received. "Reagan is not one that wears well," Nixon said. "I know," Haldeman agreed. "On a personal basis, Rockefeller is a pretty nice guy," Nixon said. "Reagan on...

This might seem to go against my rants on popular music just a few entries ago, and I'm willing to suffer a bout of hypocrisy, if only to share this. Go Home Productions' downloads page is worth exploring, no matter your distaste for one artist, the other or both....

will christopher baer

"I learned early on that I do everything in binges, drink, work, relationships: A ten-day day writing binge is ideal but it requires total isolation, solitude— no telephone, no mail. That’s why I started checking into motel rooms, what I called “going under.” And after 24 hours of getting into a flow, I lose all track of time. I’ll nap for an hour, then wake up and I've got my laptop right...

"Reports that say something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know," Rumsfeld told a press briefing. "We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. "But there are also unknown unknowns - the ones we don't know we don't know."...
