the last drive-in

I don't mean for this to turn into the piano and drive-in blog, but it seems that that's what happening, and I'd be a fool to fight fate. Last night I crossed the last local drive-in off my list. The Twin. Located at the intersection of 291 and South Kentucky Road, the Twin is the best, most prestigious drive-in I've ever been to, while still retaining a distinct ghetto fabulousness to it....

the betrayal of the drive-in

The Drive-In is an unspoken promise. For 7 dollars, you agree to forego amenities like crisp sound and image fidelity for the ability to smoke, nap and make snarky comments during movies that, in any other setting, would make your eyes bleed instead of making you feel like you just spent 4 hours of your life in a wise manner. Some other promises of the drive-in are Deliverance-esque creepy snack bars peopled...

forget it jake, it's troost

Sunday mornings I'm rarely awake, much less leaving the house. I tend to wait for the noon sun to duck down behind our admittedly sparse amount of tall buildings and for the church-going crowd to return to their homes before I can summon up the willpower to actually get things done in the outside world. But this morning, I was up bright and early, filled with the spirit of consciousness, and I...

that's why they call us the paris of the plains

in your face, other cities Traffic engineers trying to ease jams and reduce accidents in Kansas City have come up with a bold idea for this side of the Atlantic: making people drive on the left side of the road. Missouri Transportation Department officials considered a number of plans for the downtown Front Street approach to Interstate 435. But the one they settled on appears to be a national first. It involves...

today's your zombie day

I woke up this morning to a zombie world. The skies were dark gray, yet it was upwards of 70 degrees. The streets were deserted of people and then the sirens went off. When we get a tornado warning, klaxons strategically located all over town go off for indeterminate amounts of time, revolving so that they sound closer and then moving off to warn others. By 2:30 it was almost pitch black...

the latteland mashups

The bus driver playing bagpipes over down the street, the cars idling by, the shrill girls shouting laughter out with heads rocked back and the sad bastardism of Nine Inch Nails' "Something I Can Never Have" from Natural Born Killers on Latteland's sound system may be the best mashup I've heard all year....

"Some people like to sing in the shower and I like to give presidential speeches." "Jesus" "And I kid you not." • • • "Did you hear what he just said?" "No." "He was telling me he's in school, has one semester left, and he paints. So I asked him what he paints and he says 'Oh, I doubt I'll ever sell one of these.' I ask him again and he says...

the promised land

From Jon Krakauer's 'Under the Banner of Heaven': In Ohio the Mormons found their neighbors to be relatively hospitable, but in the summer of 1831 the Lord revealed to Joseph [Smith] that Kirtland was merely a way station, and that the Missouri frontier was in fact "the land which I have appointed and consecrated for the gathering of the Saints." God explained that northwestern Missouri was among the earth's holiest places: the...

this goes off at 5pm at Yjs. I don't even like the Lips as much as everyone else seems to, but I'll be there just for the weird spectacle of our old-lady mayor giving a key to the city to the perceived saviors of sound.
